** Preparing the Pieces and Sewing the Block **

First mark and cut the Color 1  2-7/8" x 5-3/4" strip into two 2-7/8" squares. Stack these and cut once on the diagonal to make four half square triangles...

Now mark and cut the Color 2  2-7/8" x 11-1/2" strip into four 2-7/8" squares. Stack these and cut once on the diagonal to make eight half square triangles...

Use the template provided to cut the block's center square from the Color 3  3-1/2" square...

Cut the Color 4  5-1/4" square in half on both diagonals to make four quarter square triangles...

Next speed piece the half squares, by stacking the Color 1 and Color 3  2-7/8" x 5-3/4" strips, right sides together and all edges aligned. On the back of the top strip, lightly mark the 2-7/8" square line and mark the diagonals in the direction shown at left. Now sew a SCANT 1/4" above and below the marked diagonals, pivoting at the square line. Now cut apart ON the marked diagonals, and on the 2-7/8" square line. This will give you four half squares. Press seam allowances towards the darker fabric. Trim these back to measure 2-1/2" if needed...

Now speed piece the first small half squares, by stacking the Color 1 and Color 3  1-7/8" x 18-3/4" strips, right sides together and all edges aligned. On the back of the top strip, lightly mark the 1-7/8" square lines and mark the diagonals in the direction shown at left. Now sew a SCANT 1/4" above and below the marked diagonals, pivoting at the square lines. Now cut apart ON the marked diagonals, and on the 1-7/8" square lines. This will give you twenty half squares. Press seam allowances towards the darker fabric. Trim these back to measure 1-1/2" if needed. Repeat this with another set of Color 1 and Color 4 strips of the same size to get twenty more in that color combo...on to Page 2!
