Next speed piece the half squares for the path of this block, by stacking the Color 1 and Color 8  2-7/8" x 14-3/8" strips, right sides together and all edges aligned. On the back of the top strip, lightly mark the 2-7/8" square lines and mark the diagonals in the direction shown at left. Now sew 1/4" above and below the marked diagonals, pivoting at the square lines. Now cut apart ON the marked diagonals, and on the 2-7/8" square lines. This will give you ten half squares. Press seam allowances towards the darker fabric. These should measure 2-1/2"...

Using Color 1 half squares and Color 8 squares, sew two star units as shown at left. Press the row seams of the top and bottom rows to the outside, and of the middle row to the center. Join the three rows to make the star. Make two units like this...

Using the multi colored half squares orientated as shown at left, piece the alternate unit. Press the top and bottom row seams to the center and the middle row to the outside. Join the rows to make the alternate block. Make another unit like this, referring to the graphic of the block at the page top for placement of the colored half squares.

Sew the two star units and two alternate blocks together as shown at left to finish the block!
