** Preparing the Pieces and Sewing the Block **

Start by cutting the Color 1  7-3/4" x 15-1/2" rectangle into eight 3-7/8" squares. Stack these and cut them once on the diagonal to make sixteen half square triangles...

Now we will speed piece the quarter square triangle sections, first by cutting the Color 2 and Color 3  4-1/4" x 17" strips into four squares of each...

Stack pairs of Color 2 and Color 3 squares right sides together and all edges aligned. On the back of the top square, using a ruler, draw in both diagonals. Sew as shown at left. First sew 1/4" to the left of the top line, as far as the horizontal line. Pivot and sew ON the drawn horizontal line, until you are 1/4" PAST the vertical line, then pivot again and sew down to the bottom. Turn the whole unit, and repeat this with the other lines. Now cut apart on the marked lines. Each pair will give you four quarter square units. Press seams towards the darker fabrics.

Now sew each quarter square unit to a half square triangle, pressing seam towards the half square triangle...
