** Preparing the Pieces and Sewing the Block **

Start by cutting the Color 1  2-1/2" x 18" strip into four 2-1/2" x 4-1/2" rectangles. Cut the Color 1  2-7/8" x 5-3/4" strip into two  2-7/8" squares. Stack these and cut them once on the diagonal to make four half square triangles. Next cut the Color 1  5-1/4" x 21" strip into four 5-1/4" squares. Stack these and cut them on both diagonals to make sixteen quarter square triangles. You only need fourteen of these per block. Now cut the Color 1  4-1/2" x 9" strip into two 4-1/2" squares...

Cut the Color 2  2-7/8" x 5-3/4" strip into two  2-7/8" squares. Stack these and cut them once on the diagonal to make four half square triangles. Cut the Color 2  2-1/2" x 20" strip into eight 2-1/2" squares. Next cut the Color 2  5" x 18" strip into eight 2-1/2" x 4-1/2" rectangles. Cut the Color 2  4-1/2" x 9" strip into two 4-1/2" squares. Cut the Color 2  5-1/4" x 10-1/2" rectangle into two 5-1/4" squares. Cut these squares in half on both diagonals to make eight quarter square triangles. You will only need six per block...

Sew the Color 1 and Color 2 half square triangles together in pairs to make half squares - using a 1/4" seam now and throughout the pattern. Press seams to darker sides. This should measure 2-1/2". Make four units like this...

Now, to make one flying geese unit, place a Color 2 small square right sides together atop a Color 1 rectangle, with edges aligned. On the back of the top square lightly mark the diagonal. Sew ON this diagonal marking. Cut off the excess seam allowance. Press the remainder towards the center. Repeat this with another Color 2 square on the other end of the rectangle. Make four flying geese units in the same manner...

Next we'll sew the quarter squares. Start by sewing two Color 1 quarter square triangles together as shown at top left. Press seam to one side. Make four units like that. Now make six units in the same way using Color 1 and Color 2 quarter square triangles, pressing seams to darker sides...on to Page 2!
