** Preparing the Pieces and Sewing the Block **

First cut the Color 1  2" x 16" strip into eight 2" squares...

Next cut twenty six Color 2  2" squares; this can really be cut from one 2" x 44" strip and one 2" x 8" strip...

Then cut the Color 2  2-3/8" x 19" strip into eight  2-3/8" squares. Stack and cut these once on the diagonal to make sixteen half square triangles...

Now add 1/4" all around to the template provided, then cut two octagons from a  7-1/2" x 15" rectangle of Color 1 fabric...

To make the half squares, stack a Color 1 and Color 2  2-3/8" x 28-1/2" strips right sides together and all edges aligned. On the back of the top strip, lightly mark off eleven 2-3/8" square lines. Now mark in the diagonals in the directions shown at left. Sew a SCANT 1/4" above and below the diagonals, pivoting at the square lines. Cut apart ON the marked diagonals and on the square lines to get twenty four half squares. Press seam allowances towards the darker fabrics. Trim to measure 1-1/2" if needed ..on to  Page 2!
