** Preparing the Pieces and Sewing the Block **

Start by marking and cutting the Color 1  2" x 8" strip into four 2" squares...

Next mark and cut the Color 1  3-1/2" x 24-1/2" strip into seven 3-1/2" squares...

Now mark and cut the Color 2  2" x 8" strip into four 2" squares...

Then mark and cut the Color 2   3-1/2" x 28" strip into eight 3-1/2" squares...

Now mark and cut the Color 2  3-1/2" x 19" strip into two 3-1/2" x 9-1/2" rectangles...

Place a small Color 1 square atop one corner of a Color 2  3-1/2" square. Stitch on the diagonal through both layers. Trim off the excess seam allowance, leaving 1/4" beyond stitching.  Press small triangle out towards corner. Make four units like this...

Repeat this same type of procedure using a Color 1  3-1/2" square and a small Color 2 square, this time sewing the small square to the top AND bottom of one side of the larger square. Make two units like this...

Speed piece the half squares by stacking the Color 1 and Color 2  3-7/8" x 7-3/4" strips right sides together and all edges aligned. On the back of the top strip lightly draw in the 3-7/8" square line, then draw in the diagonals in the direction shown at left. Now sew 1/4" above and below the marked diagonals, pivoting at the square line. Cut apart on the square line, and on the marked diagonal lines between the rows of stitching. This will give you four half squares. Press seams to the darker side. These should measure 3-1/2" square... on to Page 2!
