** Preparing the Pieces and Sewing the Block **

Start by marking and cutting the Color 1  2-3/8" x 4-3/4" strip into two 2-3/8" squares. Stack and cut these once on the diagonal to make four half square triangles...

Then mark and cut the Color 2  2-7/8" x 5-3/4" strip into two 2-7/8" squares. Stack these and cut them once on the diagonal to make four half square triangles...

Next speed piece the half squares, by stacking the Color 1 and Color 2  2-7/8" x 5-3/4" strips, right sides together and all edges aligned. On the back of the top strip, lightly mark the 2-7/8" square line and mark the diagonals in the direction shown at left. Now sew 1/4" above and below the marked diagonals, pivoting at the square lines. Now cut apart ON the marked diagonals, and on the 2-7/8" square line. This will give you four half squares. Press seam allowances towards the darker fabric. These should measure 2-1/2"...

Sew the Color 1 half square triangles to the top and bottom of the Color 2  2-1/2" square, with outer edges aligned and using a 1/4" seam. (I show them staggered here just so you can see what pieces I am talking about.) Sew the remaining Color 1 half square triangles to the left and right of the center square. Press seams towards the outer triangles. Square this up to 3-3/8"....

Now add the Color 2  half square triangles to the outer edges of our center units in the same manner. Square this up to 4-1/2"... on to Page 2!
