** Preparing the Pieces and Sewing the Block **

Start by cutting the Color 1  3" x 9" strip into four 1-1/2" x 4-1/2" rectangles. Using the template provided, cut four trapezoids from the Color 1  3" x 10-1/2" strip. Cut the Color 1  1-7/8" x 7-1/2" strip into four 1-7/8" squares...

Now cut the Color 2  1-1/2" x 6" strip into four 1-1/2" squares.  Cut the Color 2  2-7/8" x 5-3/4" strip into two 2-7/8" squares; Stack these and cut them once on the diagonal to make four half square triangles. Cut the Color 2  3-3/4" x " 9-3/8" strip into ten 1-7/8" squares. Cut TWO of these squares in half once on the diagonal to make four small half square triangles...

Using the template provided cut eight trapezoids from the Color 3  3-1/2" x 12-1/4" strip. Cut the Color 3  1-1/2" x  7-1/2" strip into five 1-1/2" squares. Cut the Color 3  1-7/8" x 22-1/2" strip into twelve 1-7/8" squares...

Using the standard 1/4" seam now and throughout the block making, here we go! To make the block's corner, first sew a Color 3 trapezoid to a Color 2  1-1/2" square. Press seam to darker side. Now sew a Color 2 small half square triangle to the side of another Color 3 trap., again pressing to the dark. Join these two units. Make four units like this...

Now we will piece the half squares.  Stack eight Color 3 and Color 2   1-7/8" squares right sides together and all edges aligned. On the back of the top squares mark in the diagonal and stitch 1/4" away from this line on each side of it. Cut apart on the diagonal line between the rows of stitching. This will give you sixteen half squares. Repeat this procedure with four Color 3 and Color 1  1-7/8" square to get eight of those. Trim these to measure 1-1/2" if needed...on to Page 2!
