** Preparing the Pieces and Sewing the Block **

Start by marking and cutting the Color 1  4-1/2" x 13-1/2" strip into three 4-1/2" squares...

Then mark and cut the Color 1  4-7/8" x 14-5/8" strip into three 4-7/8" squares. Stack these and cut them once on the diagonal to make six half square triangles...

Next, mark and cut the Color 3  2-7/8" x 17-1/4" strip into six 2-7/8" squares. Stack and cut these once on the diagonal to make twelve half square triangles...

Now speed piece the half squares by stacking the Color 2 and Color 3  2-7/8" x 8-5/8" strips right sides together and all edges aligned. On the back of the top strip draw in the 2-7/8" square lines. Then draw in the diagonals as shown at left. Sew a 1/4" above and below these marked diagonals. Cut apart on the square lines and on the marked diagonals between the rows of stitching. This will give you six half squares. Press seams towards the darker sides. These should measure 2-1/2" ...

Sew a Color 3 half square triangle to the bottom and right of each small half square. Press seams towards half square triangles. Sew a Color 1 half square triangle to each of these units to make six of the units shown at left. Press seams towards Color 1 triangle. These should measure 4-1/2"...

Now piece the block, by joining the previously made units with the Color 1 squares into three rows. Press the seams of the top and bottom rows towards the center square. Press the middle row seams towards the outer squares. Sew the rows together, and you are done! :o)  ...on to Page 2!
