Next, Cut the Color 1 and Color 2  2-7/8" x 23" strips into eight 2-7/8" squares of each. Pair these right sides together as shown at left, with all outer edges aligned. On the back of the top strip lightly draw in the diagonal, and then sew a 1/4" away from the draw line on each side of it. Cut these apart on the draw line. Press seam to the darker side. Trim to measure 2-1/2" if needed, trimming off the little points at the same time. Each square-pair will give you two half squares. You will be making a total of sixteen...

Then, using the  Color 3  2-1/2" squares and the half squares we just made make four each of the two units shown at left...

Now we'll assemble the star block units. First sew the shorter half square units made in the step above to the left and right of each nine patch unit. Then add the larger half square units to the top and bottom of each. Make two units like this. These should measure 10-1/2" at this point...

Next, lightly crease the small and large half square triangles and the trapezoid units in half to find their centers. Matching centers, sew them together to form eight pieced corner units. These should each measure 4-1/2"...

Time to assemble the cross blocks! These use the corner units we just made, the Color 1 rectangles, and a Color 3  2-1/2" square each. Make two of these cross blocks, and each one should measure 10-1/2" at this point...on to Page 3!
