** Preparing the Pieces and Sewing the Block **

Start by cutting the Color 3  4-1/2" x 26" strip into four 4-1/2" x 6-1/2" rectangles. Cut the Color 3  2-1/2" x 10" strip into four 2-1/2" squares...

Using a 1/4" seam, sew Color 2 and Color 3  2-1/2" x 20" strips right sides together along one long edge. Press to the dark side, and cut this into eight 2-1/2" wide sections. Sew pairs together as shown at lower left to make four Four Patch units...

Next, cut the Color 1 and Color 3  2-7/8" x 23" strips into eight 2-7/8" squares. Stack one of both colors right sides together and draw a light diagonal on the top square. Sew 1/4" away from the drawn line on each side of center. Cut apart on the drawn line. Each square will give you two half squares. Repeat this with all the 2-7/8" squares to make a total of sixteen half squares. These should measure 2-1/2"...

Now make four of the units shown at top left, and four of the units shown at bottom left...

Sew the units we last made in the step above to the left side of a Four Patch unit. Add the longer pieced half square strip to the top. Make four units like this...on to Page 2!
