The first thing that I would recommend that you do, is go to the Practice Paper Piecing Page.  When you feel comfy with paper piecing, come on back and try a Stars in South Dakota Block! You will need to print out one copy of each template page per block you want to make on very lightweight paper. Fat Quarters will be plenty!

** Preparing the Pieces and Sewing the Block **

Start by marking and cutting the Color 4   6" x 12" rectangle into eight 3" squares...

Next speed piece the half squares, by stacking the Color 1 and Color 4  3-3/8" x 13-1/2" strips, right sides together and all edges aligned. On the back of the top strip, lightly mark the 3-3/8" square lines and mark the diagonals in the direction shown at left. Now sew 1/4" above and below the marked diagonals, pivoting at the square lines. Now cut apart ON the marked diagonals, and on the 3-3/8" square lines. This will give you eight half squares. Press seam allowances towards the darker fabric. These should measure 3"...

Now do all your paper piecing, and then we'll start piecing this puppy!

Sew together four star top and star middle units. Piece them into four corner units as shown at left...

Then sew together four units as shown at left for the block's top, bottom, and sides...

Sew one block as shown at left for the block's center...on to Page 2!
