** Preparing the Pieces and Sewing the Block **

Start by cutting the Color 1  2-1/2" x 20" strip into eight 2-1/2" squares...

Cut the Color 3  2-1/2" x 30" strip into twelve 2-1/2" squares. Cut the Color 3  2-1/2" x 18" strip into four 2-1/2" x 4-1/2" B rectangles. Cut the Color 3  2-1/2" x 26" strip into four 2-1/2" x 6-1/2" C rectangles...

Next speed piece the half squares, by stacking the Color 3 and Color 2  2-7/8" x 11-1/2" strips, right sides together and all edges aligned. On the back of the top strip, lightly mark the 2-7/8" square lines and mark the diagonals in the direction shown at left. Now sew 1/4" above and below the marked diagonals, pivoting at the square lines. Now cut apart ON the marked diagonals, and on the 2-7/8" square lines. This will give you eight half squares. Press seam allowances towards the darker fabric. These should measure 2-1/2". Repeat this with a set of Color 3 and Color 1 strips of the same size, and a set of Color 1 and Color 2 strips as well...

Now sew small Color 3 squares and the half squares we just made together to make two of the star units shown at left.  Next sew Color 1 squares and Color 3 squares and rectangles together to make two of the Chain units shown at left...
