** Preparing the Pieces and Sewing the Block **

Start by cutting the Color 1  5" x 26" strip into eight 2-1/2" x 6-1/2" rectangles. Cut the Color 1  5" x 18" strip into eight 2-1/2" x 4-1/2" rectangles. Cut the Color 1  2-1/2" x 20" strip into eight 2-1/2" squares...

 Next cut the Color 2  2-1/2" x 18" strip into four 2-1/2" x 4-1/2" rectangles. Cut the Color 2  5" x 40" strip into thirty-two 2-1/2" squares. Cut the Color 2   2-1/2" x  30" strip into twelve more 2-1/2" squares...

Now, to make the rectangle units, place a Color 2 square right sides together atop a Color 1  6-1/2" rectangle, with outer edges aligned, as shown in the top enlargement at left. On the back of the top square lightly mark the diagonal. Sew on this diagonal marking. Cut off the excess seam allowance. Press the remainder towards the corner. Repeat this with another Color 1 square on the other end of the rectangle, marking and then sewing in the same direction as before. Make four units like this.

Make four more units, again using the longer Color 1 rectangles and Color 2 square but this time with your sewing done on the opposite diagonals, and shown in the second enlargement at left.

Then in the same manner, and using the SHORTER Color 1 and Color 2 rectangles and squares make four each of the three shorter rectangle units shown at left...on to Page 2!
