** Preparing the Pieces and Sewing the Block **

Cut one of the Color 1  3-7/8" x 7-3/4" strips into two 3-7/8" squares. Stack the squares and cut them once on the diagonal to make four half square triangles...
Cut the Color 1  3-1/2" x 28" strip into eight 3-1/2" squares...

Next cut the Color 3  3-1/2" x 26" strip into four 3-1/2" x 6-1/2" rectangles...

Now, to make one side unit, place a Color 1 square right sides together atop a Color 3 rectangle, with outer edges aligned. On the back of the top square lightly mark the diagonal. Sew on this diagonal marking. Cut off the excess seam allowance. Press the remainder towards the corner. Repeat this with another Color 1 square on the other end of the rectangle. Make four of these...

Next speed piece the half squares, by stacking the Color 1 and Color 3  3-7/8" x 7-3/4" strips, right sides together and all edges aligned. On the back of the top strip, lightly mark the 3-7/8" square line and mark the diagonals in the direction shown at left. Now sew 1/4" above and below the marked diagonals, pivoting at the square line. Now cut apart on the marked diagonals, and on the 3-7/8" square line. This will give you four half squares. Press seam allowances towards the darker fabric. These should measure 3-1/2"...

Then stack the Color 2 and Color 3  4-1/4" squares with all edges aligned. Cut in half on both diagonals to make four quarter square triangles of each. Using a 1/4" seam allowance sew together pairs of quarter square triangles with Color 2 always on the left, pressing seams to the darker side. Sew a Color 1 half square triangle to each of these pairs. Press seam towards Color 1. Make four units like this. These should measure 3-1/2"...on to Page 2!
