Working with just Squares and Half-Squares you can make a variety of fun animals! Whatever size square you want will work...just add 1/2" to the size you want your squares to finish at for seam allowances. For the half-squares, add 7/8 ( .875) to the finished size to get the size to cut them at.  EXAMPLE: 3" finished squares...cut squares at 3-1/2"...cut squares for half square triangles at 3-7/8"( cut those in half diagonally once to make hsts)
