To strip piece the center of the block, sew a Color 2  2-1/2" x 20" strip to a Color 1 strip of the same size, right sides together and using a 1/4" seam. Add another Color 2 strip, and then another Color 1 strip. Press seam allowances in alternating directions. Mark and cut apart at 2-1/2" intervals...

Assemble the checkerboard by sewing together six of the strip pieced rows as shown at left. Press seam allowances in alternating directions by row...

Sew a Color 2 half square triangle to the left end of  a remaining strip pieced unit, and a Color 1 half square triangle to the right end. Press seam allowances towards the strip pieced center. Make two of these units...

Sew one to the right side of the center checkerboard, and the other to the left...

Now sew two Color 1 2-1/2" squares together, and then a Color 1 half square triangle to either end. Sew two more Color 1 half square triangles together. Sew this "point" to the squares and triangle unit you just made. Make four of these units...

Now sew the four units made in the previous step to the four sides of the center checkerboard. Press two opposing seam allowances towards the center square, and two opposing ones towards the outer triangle corners...

Next, sew two of the units shown at left, comprised of three half squares with a Color 2 half square triangle at the end....on to Page 3!
