** Preparing the Pieces and Sewing the Block **

Cut the Color 1  5" x 16-1/2" rectangle into two 2-1/2" x 16-1/2" rectangles.  Cut the Color 1  2-1/2" x 27" strip into six 2-1/2" x 4-1/2" rectangles...

 Now cut the Color 2  2-1/2" x 28" strip into four 2-1/2" x 4-1/2" rectangles and four 2-1/2" squares...

 Cut the Color 3  4-1/2" x 18" strip into four 4-1/2" squares. Cut the Color 3  2-1/2" x 40" strip into sixteen 2-1/2" squares...

Now, to make the shorter Color 1 rectangle units, place a Color 3 small square right sides together atop the right end of a Color 1 small rectangle, with outer edges aligned. On the back of the top square lightly mark the diagonal. Sew on this diagonal marking. Cut off the excess seam allowance. Press the remainder towards the center. Make two of each of the units shown at left...

To make the longer rectangle units sew squares to each end in the same manner as above,  noting the direction of the marking and sewing. Make two units like this...

Now sew together pairs of Color 2 and Color 3 small squares. Press seam to darker side. Add a Color 2 short rectangle to the top of each, pressing seam towards rectangle. Make four units like this...

Sew the four remaining small Color 3 squares to each of the corners of the 4-1/2" Color 2 square, on the diagonals as done above. Cut the excess off and press the seam allowances towards the outer triangles...on to Page 2!
