** Preparing the Pieces and Sewing the Block **

Cut the Color 2  4-7/8" x 9-3/4" strip into two 4-7/8" squares. Stack the squares and cut them in half once on the diagonal to make four half square triangles...

Next cut one of the Color 3  2-1/2" x 10" strips into four 2-1/2" squares. Cut the Color 3  2-7/8" x 11-1/2" strip into four 2-7/8" squares. Stack these and cut them in half once on the diagonal to make eight half square triangles...
 Next stack the Color 2 and Color 3  2-7/8" x 5-3/4" strips with all edges aligned. Cut at the 2-7/8" mark to make two squares of each.  Lightly draw in the diagonal on the back of the lighter squares. Place pairs of Color 2/Color 3 squares right sides together and edges aligned, and as shown in the enlargement at left, stitch 1/4" on each side of the drawn diagonals. Cut apart on the drawn lines between the rows of stitching. Press seams to darker side. These should measure 2-1/2"...

Now stitch the Color 1 and the second Color 3  2-1/2" x 10" strips right sides together along one long edge, using a 1/4" seam allowance. Press seam to darker side and cut this apart at 2-1/2" intervals to make four pieced units...
To make the block's corners, sew a Color 3  2-7/8" half square triangle to the right and bottom of each half square unit. pressing seams toward the newly added triangles. Add a Color 2 half square triangle to each of these pieced triangle units and press the seam towards the new additions. Now place a Color 3  2-1/2" square right sides together atop the bottom edge of the newly added triangle with outer edges aligned. On the back of the top square lightly mark the diagonal. Sew ON this diagonal marking. Cut off the excess seam allowance. Press the remainder towards the corner. Repeat this with the remaining corner units...on to Page 2!
