** Preparing the Pieces and Sewing the Block **

Next cut the Color 3  3-1/4" square in half along both diagonals to make four quarter square triangles...
Then cut the Color 4  3-1/4" x 6-1/2" strip into two 3-1/4" squares. Stack those and cut in half along both diagonals to make eight quarter square triangles. Now cut the Color 4  2-1/2" x 20" strip into eight 2-1/2" squares...
Speed piece the Half Square units, by stacking a Color 1 and Color 4  2-7/8" x 11-1/2" strips right sides together and all edges aligned. On the back of the top strip, lightly mark the 2-7/8" square lines. Draw in the diagonals in the direction shown at left. Now sew 1/4" above and below the marked diagonals, pivoting at the square lines. Cut apart on the square lines, and on the marked diagonals between the rows of stitching. This will give you eight Half Squares. Press seams towards darker fabric. These should measure 2-1/2"...
To make the Quarter Squares, use a 1/4" seam to join together a Color 2 and Color 2 quarter square triangle. Make four of these. Then make four more using Color 3 and Color 4 quarter square triangles. Press seams to the darker sides. Sew these pieced triangles together to give you four Quarter Squares. These should measure 2-1/2"...on to Page 2!
