** Preparing the Pieces and Sewing the Block **

Start by marking and cutting the Color 1  5" x 10" strip into eight 2- 1/2" squares. Also, cut one Color 1 4- 1/2" square...

Then mark and cut the Color 2   5" x 17" strip into four 2- 1/2" x 8- 1/2" rectangles. Cut the Color 2  5" x  9" strip into four 2- 1/2" x 4- 1/2" rectangles...

Sew a Color 1 small square to each end of two of the smaller Color 2 rectangles, using 1/4" seams. Press seams towards the darker fabric...

Next, sew a Color 1 small square to each end of two of the longer Color 2 rectangles, using 1/4" seams. Press seams towards the darker fabric...

Now sew the two remaining short Color 2 rectangles to each side of the center Color 1 square. Press seams towards the darker fabric...

Then, sew the two shorter rectangles with squares on their ends to the top and bottom of the center unit, pressing seams towards the top and  bottom strips...

...on to Page 2!
