** Preparing the Pieces and Sewing the Block **

First mark and cut the Color 1  5" x 22-1/2" strip into ten 2-1/2" x 4-1/2" rectangles...

 

 

Then mark and cut the Color 2  4-1/2" x 18" strip into four 4-1/2" squares...

Sew two of the Color 1 rectangles right sides together along one short end, using as always a 1/4" seam. Press seam allowance to one side. Make two of these units...

 

 

Next sew another Color 1 rectangle to one side of a Color 2 square, right sides together. Press seam allowance towards the darker fabric. Make two of these units...

 

Now sew a Color 1 rectangle to the top of another Color 2 square, and then another Color 1 rectangle to the bottom of the same square. Press seam allowances towards the darker fabric. Make two of these units...
