The first thing that I would recommend that you do, is go to the Practice Paper Piecing Page.  When you feel comfy with paper piecing, come on back and try an Old Snowflake Block! You will need to print out two copies of the template page per block you want to make on very lightweight paper.

** Preparing the Pieces and Sewing the Block **

Start by cutting the Color 1 and Color 2  5-1/4" x 10-1/2" strips into two 5-1/4" squares of each. Stack these squares and cut twice on the diagonal to make eight quarter square triangles of each...

Sew the quarter square triangles right sides together using 1/4" seam as shown at left. Press seams to darker side. Join those units to make quarter squares. Trim these to measure 4-1/2" if needed...

Now paper piece the four corner units. Lay out ALL of the units with the extra Color 1  4-1/2" square in the block's center.  Sew three horizontal rows, pressing the top and bottom row seams to the outside, and the middle row seam to the center.  Join the rows and your Old Snowflake block is complete!...on to Page 2!
