Then speed piece the half squares by stacking the Color 1 and Color 2  2-7/8" x 11-1/2" strips right sides together and all edges aligned. On the back of the top strip, lightly mark 2-7/8" square lines. Mark the diagonals as shown at left as well. Now sew 1/4" above and below the marked diagonals, pivoting at the square lines. Cut apart on the marked diagonal lines between the lines of stitching, and on the square lines. This will give you eight half squares. Press the seam allowances towards the darker fabrics. These should measure 2-1/2" ...

 

Sew half square/square pairs as shown at left, four each of the two arrangements...

Sew two of the half square/square pairs to the right side of Color 1  4-1/2" squares. Sew four sets of Color 2 rectangle pairs. Sew two of the half square/square pairs to the right side of  Color 1  4-1/2" squares. These will be the units from which you sew rows 1 and 3 of the block...

To makes rows 1 and 3, sew a rectangle unit to the right side of a square/half square/square unit, using as always a 1/4" seam. Add another square/half square/square unit to the right of the rectangle unit. Press seams towards the center units. Make two rows like this...
