The first thing that I would recommend that you do, is go to the Practice Paper Piecing Page.  When you feel comfy with paper piecing, come on back and try a Maltese Cross and Star Block! You will need to print out four copies of the template page per block you want to make on very lightweight paper. You will also need one 2-1/2" center square. FQ's will be fine!
After your units are paper pieced, join the side-center pairs. Then lay out all the pieced as shown at left. Sew three horizontal rows. Join the rows and it's done!

Here, on its side, is a quilt with four blocks by five and a pieced border made of half squares and rectangles!
