The first thing that I would recommend that you do, is go to the Practice Paper Piecing Page.  When you feel comfy with paper piecing, come on back and try a Lighthouse Stars block! You will need to print out one copy of the template page per block you want to make on very lightweight paper. Fat quarters should be plenty!

** Preparing the Pieces and Sewing the Block **

Start by cutting the Color 1  5" x 13" strip into four 2-1/2" x 6-1/2" rectangles...

Now cut the Color 2  5" x 22-1/2" strip into eighteen 2-1/2" squares. You only need seventeen per block...

To sew one side unit, place a Color 2  square right sides together atop a Color 1 rectangle, with outer edges aligned. On the back of the square lightly mark the diagonal. Sew on this diagonal marking. Cut off the excess seam allowance. Press the remainder towards the corner. Repeat this with another Color 2 square on the other end of the rectangle. Make four units like this...

Time to do your paper piecing of the star units! Once all units are paper pieced, lay them out at you see at left with Color 2 squares as the corners and center. Using a scant 1/4" seam allowance, sew three horizontal rows. Join the rows to finish the star...on to Page 2!
