This makes a 16" block!

** Preparing the Pieces and Sewing the Block **

First cut the Color 3  2-1/2" x 20" into eight 2-1/2" squares...

Then, speed piece the half squares, by stacking the Color 3 and Color 1  2-7/8" x 34-1/2" strips right sides together, and the Color 3 and Color 2  2-7/8" x 23" strips right sides together. On the back of the top strips lightly mark the 2-7/8" square lines. Mark the diagonals in the directions shown at left  also. Now sew 1/4" above and below the marked diagonals, pivoting at the square lines. Cut apart ON the marked diagonals, and on the square lines. Press seam allowances towards the darker fabrics. These should measure 2-1/2"...

 

 

Now sew together four Color 1 half squares, and then four Color 2 half squares. Sew the two units together as shown at left. Make two of these units, and make two with the angle of the rows of half squares reversed...

Sew one of the first two units to the top of the Color 3  8-1/2" square, and then another to the bottom, using scant 1 /4" seams. Press seam allowances towards the center square...
