** Preparing the Pieces and Sewing the Block **

Start by marking and cutting the Color 2  6-1/2" x 32-1/2" strip into five 6-1/2" squares...

Next mark and cut the Color 2  3-1/2" x 26" strip into four 3-1/2" x  6-1/2" rectangles...

Then mark and cut the Color 3  7" x 35" strip into twenty 3-1/2" squares...

Now speed piece the half squares by stacking the Color 1 and Color 3  2-3/8" x 38" strips, right sides together and all edges aligned. On the back of the top strip, lightly mark off the diagonals in the direction shown at left, and mark the 2-3/8" square lines as well. Now sew a SCANT 1/4" above and below the marked diagonals, in continuous seams, pivoting at the square lines. Cut apart on the marked diagonals between the lines of stitching, and on the square lines, to get a total of thirty-two half squares. Press the seam allowances towards the darker fabrics. Trim these back to measure 2" if needed...

Sew four half squares together, using a SCANT 1/4" seam. Make eight of these units, four of each type shown at left...on to Page 2!
