** Preparing the Pieces and Sewing the Block **

Start by cutting the Color 1  2-1/2" x 20" strip into eight 2-1/2" squares. Then cut the Color 1  9" x 18" rectangle into eight 4-1/2" squares...

Next cut the Color 2  5" x 17-1/2" strip into fourteen 2-1/2" squares. Cut the Color 2  2-1/2" x 18" strip into four  2-1/2" x 4-1/2" rectangles. Cut the Color 2  9" x 17" strip into four  4-1/2" x 8-1/2" rectangles...

Now let's speed piece the small half squares, by stacking the Color 1 and Color 2  2-7/8" x 14-3/8" strips, right sides together and all edges aligned. On the back of the top strip, lightly mark the 2-7/8" square lines, then mark in the diagonals in the direction shown at left. Now sew a scant 1/4" above and below the marked diagonals, pivoting at the square lines. Cut apart on the square lines, and on the marked diagonal lines between the rows of stitching. this will give you ten half squares. Press seams to darker side. Square these back to be 2-1/2" square if needed...

Sew the small Color 2 squares to the half squares we just made, as shown at left, using scant 1/4" seams. Press seams towards the squares. Sew pairs of these together to make 5 four patch units, also shown at left...on to Page 2!
