** Preparing the Pieces and Sewing the Block **

Start by marking and cutting the Color 1  3-1/2" x 14" strip into four 3-1/2" squares...

Then mark and cut the Color 2 and Color 3  2" x 16" strips into eight 2" squares of each...

Sew the Color 2 and Color 3  2" x 16" strips right sides together along one long edge in a scant 1/4" seam. Press to dark side. Cut this at 2" intervals to get eight pieced strips. Join the pieced strips to make four four patches...

Next sew the Color 1 and Color 3  2" x 28" strips right sides together along one long edge as we did in the step above. Mark at cut this at 3-1/2" intervals as shown at left...

Cut the Color 2  5-3/8" x 10-3/4" strip into two 5-3/8" squares. Stack these and cut them once on the diagonal to make four half square triangles...

Sew the Color 2 half square triangles to opposing sides of the Color 1  6-3/4" square, using scant 1/4" seams. Press seams towards triangles. Now sew on the two remaining half square triangles, again pressing out towards the corners...

To make the blocks side units, starting at upper left, place a small Color 3 squares right sides together to and lined up with, a Color 1 3-1/2" square. Draw in the diagonal on the back of the small square and sew on that drawn line. Cut off the excess seam allowance, and gently press the remainder towards the corner. Repeat this with another Color 3 square on the upper right corner, and Color 2 squares on the bottom two corners. Make four units like this......on to Page 2!
