Fat quarters should be plenty!

The first thing that I would recommend that you do, is go to the Practice Paper Piecing Page.  When you feel comfy with paper piecing, come on back and try a Flying Fish Block! You will need to print out four copies of the template page per block you want to make on very lightweight paper. You will also need one 2-1/2" square of fish body fabric.

After your units are paper pieced we'll start assembling the block. First sew the extra 2-1/2" square of fish body fabric right sides together to the upper left fish bottom edge. (I show it staggered here so you can see what units I mean...yours' should be even.) Sew from outer left edge to a point 1/4" from the end of the square. Backstitch at that point. Press seam towards fish...

Now add the upper right fish to the right of that...

Then add the bottom right fish...

Now sew from the bottom edge of the lower left fish up to the 1/4" point from the upper edge. Backstitch...

...on to Page 2!
