If you prefer, here is a TEMPLATE to use to cut the center square! It's an odd measurement!

** Preparing the Pieces and Sewing the Block **

Mark and cut the Color 2   2" x 8" strip into four 2" squares for the block's outside corner squares.  Mark and cut the Color 2  3" x 12" strip into four 3" squares for the center star unit's corner squares.  Mark and cut the Color 2  1-5/8" x 14-1/2" strip into two 1-5/8" x 7-1/4" rectangles. Mark and cut the Color 2  1-5/8" x 19" strip into two 1-5/8" x 8-1/2" rectangles...

Now speed piece the half squares by stacking the Color 1 and Color 2  2-3/8" x 14-1/4" strips right sides together in pairs with all edges aligned. On the back of the top strip, lightly mark the 2-3/8" square lines and mark the diagonals in the direction shown at left. Now sew 1/4" above and below the marked diagonals, pivoting at the square lines. Now cut apart ON the marked diagonals, and on the 2-3/8" square lines too. Each set will give you twelve half squares. Press seam allowances towards the darker fabric. These should measure 2" ...

Sew a Color 1 quarter square triangle to the right and bottom of a Color 2  3" square, pressing seams towards triangles. Add Color 2 quarter square triangles to the left and right of the unit, again pressing seams towards newest triangle additions. Make two units like this...
