** Preparing the Pieces and Sewing the Block **

Start by marking and cutting the Color 1  5" x 18" strip into eight 2-1/2" x 4-1/2" rectangles...

Then mark and cut the Color 3  5" x 25" strip into twenty 2-1/2" squares...

Now stack the Color 2 and Color 3  2-7/8" x 23" strips right sides together and all edges aligned. On the back of the top strip, lightly mark the 2 7/8" square lines and mark the diagonals in the direction shown at left. Now sew a SCANT 1/4" above and below the marked diagonals, pivoting at the square lines. Now cut apart ON the marked diagonals, and on the 2 7/8" square lines. This will give you sixteen half squares. Press seam allowances towards the darker fabric. Trim these back to measure 2-1/2" if needed...

To make the rectangle units, place a Color 3  2-1/2" square lined up first with the left end of a Color 1 rectangle, right sides together. On the back of the square draw in the diagonal line as shown at top left and sew on the drawn line. Cut off the excess seam allowance and press the remainder towards the darker fabric. Repeat this with another Color 3 square on the other end of the rectangle. Trim these back to be 2-1/2" x 4-1/2" if needed. Make four units like this, and four with the diagonals going in the opposite direction, as shown at bottom left...

Sew four corner units as shown at left, using scant 1/4" seam and pressing seams in opposing directions by row...
