** Preparing the Pieces and Sewing the Block **

First cut the Color 1  3-1/2" x 22" strip into one rectangle 3-1/2" x 12-1/2", and one rectangle 3-1/2" x 9-1/2"...

Now speed piece the half squares by stacking the two 3-7/8" x 19-3/8" strips right sides together and all edges aligned. On the back of the top strip, mark the 3-7/8" square lines and mark the diagonals as shown at left. Sew 1/4" above and below the marked diagonals, pivoting at the square lines. Cut apart on the marked diagonals, and on the square lines. Press seam allowances towards the darker fabrics. This will give you ten half squares. You only need nine of them for this block. These should measure 3-1/2"...

Sew five of the half squares together as shown at left to make the top row of the block...

Then sew three together as shown at left to make the right side of the block...

Sew the remaining half square to the right end of the shorter Color 1 rectangle...

Now cut the Color 1 and Color 2  9-7/8" squares in half diagonally. You will only need one triangle of each for this block. Sew one of each together as shown at left to make the block's center...save the others for a future project!!
