The first thing that I would recommend that you do, is go to the Practice Paper Piecing Page.  When you feel comfy with paper piecing, come on back and try a Star & Square block! You will need to print out two copies of the template page per block you want to make on very lightweight paper. You also need one 3-1/2" center square   Fat quarters should be plenty!

After your units are paper pieced, lay them out as shown at left. Sew three horizontal rows. Sew the rows together and you are finished! :o) 

Here are three blocks by three in a wall hanging, with alternating blocks having reversed colors :o) It's surrounded by a pieced and then a plain border!
