** Preparing the Pieces and Sewing the Block **

First cut your Color 3  2-1/2" x 18" strip into four 2-1/2" x 4-1/2" rectangles...

Then cut the Color 3  2-1/2" x 10" strip into four 2-1/2" squares...

Next let's speed piece the half squares; first using Color 2/Color 3, place the two 2-7/8" x 11-1/2" strips right sides together and edges aligned. Mark the 2-7/8" square lines. Mark the diagonals in the direction shown at left. Now sew 1/4" above and below the marked diagonals, pivoting as needed at each square line Cut apart ON the marked diagonals, and on the square lines. This will give you eight half squares. Press seams to darker side. These should measure 2-1/2". Do the same with the Color 1/Color 3  2-7/8" x 17-1/4" strips to make twelve half squares in that color combination...

To make the corner units, sew a Color 1/Color3 square together, right sides together, using a 1/4" seam, along the right side. Press seam allowance towards the half square. Then sew a Color 2/Color3 half square to a Color 1/Color 3 half square, pressing seam allowance to the left. Sew these two together along the bottom edge, being sure they are facing in the proper direction, and press seam allowance towards the bottom row. Make four of these units...on to Page 2!
