** Preparing the Pieces
and Sewing the Block ** |

Start by marking and cutting the Color 1 4-1/4" x
8-1/2" strip into two 4-1/4" squares. Stack these and cut
them twice on the diagonal to make eight quarter square triangles...

Next mark and cut the Color 1 2-3/8" x 19" strip into
eight 2-3/8" squares. Cut these once on the diagonal to make
sixteen half square triangles. Mark and cut the Color 2
2-3/8" x 9-1/2" strip into four 2-3/8" squares. Cut
these once on the diagonal to make eight half square triangles...

Now mark and cut the Color 2 2" x 8" strip into
four 2" squares...
Then mark and cut the Color 2 3-7/8" x
7-3/4" strip into two 3-7/8" squares. Stack these and cut
them once on the diagonal to make four half square triangles... |
Mark and cut the Color 3 3-7/8" x
15-1/2" strip into four 3-7/8" squares. Stack and cut
these once on the diagonal to make eight half square triangles... |

Then mark and cut the Color 3 3-1/2" x 14" strip
into four 3-1/2" squares...

Using the Color 1 and Color 2 half square triangles, sew four
each of the two pieced triangles shown at left, using a scant
1/4" seam and pressing seams to the darker side...

Sew Color 1 quarter square triangles to each of the pieced triangle
units we just made, again using a scant 1/4" seam allowance.
Press towards the newly added Color 1 triangles. Then add a Color 3
half square triangle to each unit, and press seams towards the colored
half. You will make four of each of the two units shown at left. Trim
these back to measure 3-1/2" if needed...

Sew the remaining Color 1 half square triangles to the right and
bottom of the small Color 2 squares. Press seams towards the Color 1
triangles. Sew a Color 2 half square triangle to each of those pieced
square units. Trim these back to measure 3-1/2" if needed...On to
