** Preparing the Pieces and Sewing the Block **

Cut the Color 1  1-1/2" x 6" strip into four 1-1/2" squares. Cut the Color 2  1-1/2" x 7-1/2" strip into five 1-1/2" squares. Now sew these together as shown at left, using a 1/4" seam, to make the center nine Patch unit. Press seams towards darker color. This unit should measure 3-1/2" when done...

Next sew together the two Color 2 and one Color 1 1-1/2" x 14" strips as shown at left, pressing seam towards the darker strip. Cut this apart at 3-1/2" intervals. Each of these units should be 3-1/2" square...

Next speed piece the half squares, by stacking the Color 1 and Color 2  3-7/8" x 7-3/4" strips, right sides together and all edges aligned. On the back of the top strip, lightly mark the 3-7/8" square lines and mark the diagonals in the direction shown at left. Now sew 1/4" above and below the marked diagonals, pivoting at the square line. Now cut apart ON the marked diagonals, and on the 3-7/8" square line. This will give you four half squares. Press seam allowances towards the darker fabric. These should measure 3-1/2" ... on to Page 2!
