** Preparing the Pieces and Sewing the Block **

Start by marking and cutting the Color 1  3-1/2" x 17-1/2" strip into five 3-1/2" squares...

Now sew a Color 2  1-1/2" x 12" strip to a Color 1 strip of the same length, right sides together, along one long edge, using a SCANT 1/4" seam. Add another Color 1 strip to the bottom of that. Press seams towards the darker fabrics. Cut this at 1-1/2" intervals to make eight little units...

Then, in the same manner join the two Color 2   1-1/2" x 20" strips and the Color 1 strip of the same length. Press seam allowances towards the darker fabrics. Cut this unit four times at the 1-1/2" mark, and then cut  the remainder four times at the 3-1/2" mark...

Using the small units, make four checkerboard units as shown at left...

Now speed piece the half squares by stacking the Color 1 and Color 2  3-7/8" x 23-1/4" strips right sides together and all edges aligned. On the back of the top strip, lightly mark the 3-7/8" square lines. Mark the diagonals as shown at left. Now sew  1/4" above and below the marked diagonals, pivoting at the square lines. Cut apart on the square lines, and on the diagonals between the lines of stitching. This will give you twelve half squares. Press the seam allowances towards the darker fabrics. Trim to measure 3-1/2" if needed...
