** Preparing the Pieces and Sewing the Block **

Start by marking and cutting the Color 3  2-1/2" x 10" strip into four 2-1/2" squares...

Cut the Color 2 and Color 3  3-1/4" x 6-1/2" strips into two 3-1/4" squares of each. Stack these two at a time and cut them in half on both diagonals to get eight quarter square triangles of each color...

Sew the quarter square triangles right sides together using scant 1/4" seams as shown at left to make a total of four quarter squares. press seams to darker sides. Trim these to measure 2-1/2" if needed...

Next speed piece the half squares, by stacking the Color 1 and Color 3  2-7/8" x 11-1/2" strips, right sides together and all edges aligned. On the back of the top strip, lightly mark the 2-7/8" square lines and mark the diagonals in the direction shown at left. Now sew 1/4" above and below the marked diagonals, pivoting at the square lines. Now cut apart ON the marked diagonals, and on the 2-7/8" square lines. This will give you eight half squares. Press seam allowances towards the darker fabric. These should measure 2-1/2" . Repeat this with the other two Color 1 and Color 3 2-7/8" x 11-1/2" strips...

Sew the quarter squares, the Color 3  2-1/2" squares and the Color 1  2-1/2" square together to make the block's center unit... on to Page 2!
