This makes a 12" block !

** Preparing the Pieces and Sewing the Block **

Start by cutting the Color 1  2-1/2" x 18" strip into four 2-1/2" x 4-1/2" rectangles. Cut the Color 1  2-1/2" x 10" strip into four 2-1/2" squares...
 

 

Cut the Color 3  4-1/2" x 13-1/2" strip into one 4-1/2" x 8-1/2" rectangle and two 2-1/2" x 4-1/2" rectangles...

 

Speed piece the half squares by stacking the Color 1 and Color 2  2-7/8" x 17-1/4" strips, right sides together and edges aligned. On the back of the top strip, mark the 2-7/8" square lines and mark the diagonals as shown at left. Now sew 1/4" above and below the diagonals, pivoting at the square lines. Now cut apart on the diagonals, and on the 2-7/8" square lines. This will give you twelve half squares. Press seam allowances towards the darker fabric. These should measure 2-1/2" ...

 

 

Sew the Color 1 and Color 3 2-1/2" x 4-1/2" rectangles right sides together along one long edge in a 1/4" seam. Press  to darker side. Make two units like this...

 

 

 Sew Color 1 squares and half square units together to make the block's corner units. Make four units like this...
