** Preparing the
Pieces and Sewing the Block ** |
|

|
Start by cutting the Color 1 5" x
20" strip into sixteen 2-1/2" squares. Cut the Color 2
5" x 12-1/2" strip into ten 2-1/2" squares. Cut
the Color 4 5" x 12-1/2" strip into ten
2-1/2" squares. Cut the Color 5 5" x
12-1/2" strip into ten 2-1/2" squares. Cut the Color 3
2-1/2" x 12-1/2" strip into five 2-1/2" squares, and
cut the Color 3 2-1/2" x 10" strip into four
2-1/2" squares... |
|

|
Now mark and cut the Color 3 5" x
13-1/2" strip into six 2-1/2" x 4-1/2" rectangles... |
|

|
Next we'll speed piece the half
squares, by stacking the Color 1 and Color 3 2-7/8" x
20-1/8" strips, right sides together and all edges aligned. On
the back of the top strip, lightly mark the 2-7/8" square lines
and mark the diagonals in the direction shown at left. Now sew a
scant 1/4" above and below the marked diagonals, pivoting
at the square lines. Now cut apart on the marked diagonals, and on
the 2-7/8" square lines. This will give you fourteen half
squares. Press seam allowances towards the darker fabric. Trim these
back to measure 2-1/2" if needed... |
|

|
Now we are ready to piece the block! Lay out all your
units following the color numbers at left, and sew nine horizontal
rows, pressing rows seams in alternating directions. Join the rows
and you have completed one Mary's Own Block! ...on to Page
