The first thing that I would recommend that you do, is go to the Practice Paper Piecing Page.  When you feel comfy with paper piecing, come on back and try a Marcia's Whirling Star! You will need to print out one copy of  the center unit, and four copies of each of the other units needed per block you want to make on very lightweight paper. A Fat Quarter of each fabric should be plenty!

After you have paper pieced the necessary units start joining them as shown at left. Join the square / half square/ rectangle units to the bottoms of the corresponding flying geese units. There will be four of these...

Next we will start building out from the center unit. Place the lower square/flying geese unit right sides together and edges lined up with the center unit. Begin sewing a 1/4" seam 1/4" in from the end of the center square, and sew to a point 1/4" from the other end of the center square. Press the seam allowance towards the outer strip...

Working in a circular fashion around the center square, add the next unit to the left side, again starting and stopping your sewing 1/4" from the ends of the center square. Press this seam allowance towards the inner square. Leave the lower end seam open for now...

Continue in the same manner around the center by adding the next unit to the top of the center square, pressing this seam allowance towards the outer strip. Leave that end seam un sewn for now also...

Now add the last unit to the right side of the center square, following the same directions. press this seam towards the inner square. Next, go back and stitch the four short un sewn seams... on to Page 2
