** Preparing the Pieces and Sewing the Block **

Start by cutting the Color 2  1-1/2" x 9" strip into one 1-1/2" x 5-1/2" strip and one 1-1/2" x 3-1/2" strip... Next cut the Color 3  1-1/2" x 9" strip into two 1-1/2" x 4-1/2" strips...Then cut the Color 4  1-1/2" x 5" strip into one 1-1/2" x 3-1/2" strip and one 1-1/2" square...Now cut the Color 5  1-1/2" x 5" strip into two 1-1/2" x  2-1/2" strips...

Using a 1/4" seam, construct the Log Cabin part of this block by adding:

1) the Color 4  1-1/2" square to the Color 6  1-1/2" square... 2) Press out that seam, then add one Color  5  1-1/2" x 2-1/2" strip to the bottom edge... 3) Press that out and add the other Color  5  1-1/2" x 2-1/2" strip to the left side... 4) Press then add the Color 4  1-1/2" x 3-1/2" strip to the top edge ... 5) Press and then add the Color 2  1-1/2" x 3-1/2" strip to the right edge... 6) Press and add a Color 3  1-1/2" x 4-1/2" strip to the bottom edge... 7)Press out the seam and add the other Color 3  1-1/2" x 4-1/2" strip to the left edge... 8) Lastly, Press out the previous seam and add the Color 2  1-1/2" x 5-1/2" strip to the top edge, and press out that seam.  This should measure 5-1/2"...

Now cut the Color 1 and Color 8  1-7/8" x 9-3/8" strips into five 1-7/8" squares of each. Pair the squares right sides together with all edges aligned. On the back of the top square lightly mark the diagonal. Sew 1/4" away from the drawn line on each side of it. Cut apart ON the drawn line. Press seams to darker sides. Each square-pair will give you two Half Square units. Trim these to measure 1-1/2" if needed. You need a total of ten Half Squares...now on to Page 2!
