** Preparing the Pieces and Sewing the Block **

Start by cutting the Color 1 and Color 3  5-3/8" x 10-3/4" strips into two 5-3/8" squares of each. Stack these and cut once on the diagonal to make four half square triangles of each...
Sew the half square triangles together as shown at left, using a scant 1/4" seam now and throughout the pattern. Press to darker side. Trim to measure 5" if needed...

Now cut the Color 3  2" x 8" strip into four 2" squares...

Next cut the Color 2 and Color 3  4-3/4" x 14-1/4" strips into twelve 2-3/8" squares of each. Cut the squares each in half once on the diagonal to make twenty four half square triangles of each. (not shown) Using a scant 1/4" seam allowance now and throughout this project, stitch the half square triangles together in pairs to make a total of twenty-four half squares. Press seams to dark side. These should measure 2"...

Using the half squares we just made and the small Color 3  2"squares, sew four of each of the units shown at left...

Sew the shorter half square triangle pieced units to the right of a larger half square. Now add a longer pieced half square unit to the top. Make four units like this...on to Page 2!
