** Preparing the Pieces and Sewing the Block **

Using the template provided HERE, cut nine squares to be the centers of your Square-in-Square units. You can get these from a 4" x 36" strip of fabric with little to no waste...

Next, mark and cut the Color 2  4-1/2" x 18" strip into four  4-1/2" squares...

Then mark and cut the Color 3  5-3/4" x 25-7/8" strip into eighteen 2-7/8" squares. Cut each of these in half once on the diagonal to make thirty-six half square triangles...

Now mark and cut the two Color 3  5" x 18" strips into sixteen 2-1/2" x 4-1/2" rectangles...

Speed piece the small half squares by stacking the Color 2 and Color 3  2-7/8" x 23" strips right sides together and all edges aligned. On the back of the top strip lightly mark the 2-7/8" square lines, then draw in the diagonals as shown at left. Sew 1/4" above and below the marked diagonals, pivoting at the square lines. Cut apart on the square lines and on the marked diagonals between the rows of stitching. This will give you sixteen half squares. Press seams towards darker sides. These should measure 2-1/2" ...

Sew the blocks four corner units as shown at left, using all scant 1/4" seams...

Make the square-in-square units by sewing a Color 3 half square triangle to the side of a Color 1 square. Press seam towards triangle. Repeat this with another HST on the opposing side, and then two more on the last two sides.  Make nine units like this. Trim them back to measure 4-1/2" square if needed...on to Page 2!
