** Preparing the Pieces and Sewing the Block **

First, speed piece the half squares, by stacking the Color 1 and Color 3  2-7/8" x 11-1/2" strips, right sides together and all edges aligned. On the back of the top strip, lightly mark the 2-7/8" square lines and mark the diagonals in the direction shown at left. Now sew a SCANT 1/4" above and below the marked diagonals, pivoting at the square lines. Now cut apart ON the marked diagonals, and on the 2-7/8" square lines. This will give you eight half squares. Press seam allowances towards the darker fabric. Trim these back to measure 2-1/2" if needed...

Next sew a Color 2 and Color 3  1-1/2" x 16" strip together along one long edge using a scant 1/4" seam. Press to darker side and cut into four 2-1/2" wide units and four 1-1/2" wide units...

Cut the Color 3  2-1/2" x 12-1/2" strip into five 2-1/2" squares. Sew each one of these to one of the 2-1/2" wide units we just made, as shown at left. The extra Color 3 2-1/2" square will be for the block's center...
Now sew together a Color 1 and Color 3  1-1/2" x 18" strip along one long edge. Press to dark side and cut into twelve 1-1/2" wide units...

Sew four of the four patch units shown at top left, and four of the four patch units shown at bottom left...

Sew two four patch units and two half squares together to make each of the four corner units...on to Page 2!
