The first thing that I would recommend that you do, is go to the Practice Paper Piecing Page.  When you feel comfy with paper piecing, come on back and try a Four & Twenty Blackbirds block! You will need to print out two copies of the template A page, and one each of the B & C pages per block you want to make on very lightweight paper. A Fat Quarter of each fabric should be plenty!

After paper piecing all units, join the shorter side units to the center, then add the longer side units. Lastly add the four corners to finish your block!

Here are four blocks by five with a pieced border!
