This makes a 16" block!

..AND was drawn and colored by my 14 year old helper, Cubtoo! :o)

A Firewheel, by-the-by is another name for gallardia, a.k.a. Indian Blanket....

** Preparing the Pieces and Sewing the Block **

First mark and cut the Color 1  2 -/2" x 30" strip into twelve 2-1/2" squares...

Then mark and cut the Color 2  2-1/2" x 20" strip into eight 2-1/2" squares...

Now measure and cut the Color 3  2-1/2" x 26" strip into four  2-1/2" x 6-1/2" rectangles, and then the Color 3   2-1/2" x 34" strip into four 2-1/2" x 8-1/2" rectangles...

We'll speed piece the half squares, by stacking the Color 2 and Color 1  2-7/8" x 17-1/4" strips, and the Color 3 and Color 1  2-7/8" x 11-1/2" strips, right sides together. On the backs of the top strips, lightly mark the diagonals in the direction (s) shown at left. Mark the 2-7/8" square lines as well. Now sew a scant 1/4" above the marked diagonals in one continuous seam from the upper left corner to the upper right corner, pivoting at the square lines. Turn strips and sew back a scant 1 /4" on the other side of the marked diagonals, and then cut apart ON the marked diagonals and on the square lines. Press seam allowances towards the darker fabrics. Trim these back to measure 2-1/2" if needed...

Then place a small Color 2 square lined up the right end of a Color 3  2 1/2" x 6 1/2" rectangle, right sides together...

On the back of the small square draw a diagonal line, and sew ON this marked line. Clip off the excess seam allowance, press the remainder towards the rectangle. Repeat with the remaining Color 1  2-1/2" x 6-1/2" rectangles. You will want two with squares sewn to the right end, and two on the left ends. Repeat this same procedure with the remaining small Color 2 squares and the Color 3   2-1/2" x 8-1/2" rectangles. Again, you want two of these with squares sewn to the right ends, and two to the left...on to Page 2!
