** Preparing the Pieces and Sewing the Block **

Start by marking and cutting the Color 1  3-7/8" x 15-1/2" strip into four 3-7/8" squares. Stack the squares and cut them once on the diagonal to make eight half square triangles...

Next mark and cut the Color 2  2-7/8" x 5-3/4" strip into two 2-7/8" squares. Stack these and cut them once on the diagonal to make four half square triangles. Cut the Color 2  3-1/4" square in half on both diagonals to make four quarter square triangles...
 

 

Mark and cut the Color 3  4-1/4" x 8-1/2" strip into two 4-1/4" squares. Stack these and cut them twice on the diagonal to make eight quarter square triangles...

 

Then mark and cut the Color 4  4-1/4" x 8-1/2" strip into two 4-1/4" squares. Stack these and cut them twice on the diagonal to make eight quarter square triangles. Cut the Color 4  3-1/4" square in half on both diagonals to make four quarter square triangles...

 Now sew two Color 4 and one Color 2  1-1/2" x 12" strips together along the long edges, in a scant 1/4" seam, as shown at left. Press seams towards outsides. Mark and cut this at 1-1/2" intervals, yielding eight units...

Now sew two Color 4 and one Color 2  1-1/2" x 6" strips together along the long edges, in a scant 1/4" seam, as shown at left. Press seams to center. Mark and cut this at 1-1/2" intervals, yielding four units...

Sew the strip units made in the last two steps together into nine patches as shown at left. Make four units like this...
